Project Management

Project Management is defined as being the discipline of planning, organizing, securing, and managing resources to achieve specific goals.  In order to reach those goals, a project manager must simultaneously manage four basic elements of a project.  Those four basic elements are:

  • Resources

    People, equipment, material

  • Time

Task paths, task dependencies, task durations

  • Money

    Budget, contingencies, expenses

  • Scope

    Project goals, size, requirements

All four elements must be managed for a project to be successful.

The most important element of a project is the scope.  Project scope is what the project is supposed to accomplish and it is the first and last task of a successful project.  The scope cannot exceed the resources, time, or money (budget) of the project.  Only when the scope is clearly defined and associated to the timeline and budget can the project be successful.
